Calls for free parking around Reading's mosque

There's calls for parking charges outside Reading's Mosque to be scrapped during peak prayer times.

Users of the Islamic centre on South Street have complained about having to pay and display in the area when it used to be free to park short term.

Reading Borough Council insists the rules on parking have to be the same for everyone.

Richard Willis is in charge of transport in Reading. He said "Under the new rules for the residents parking scheme, faith groups will be able to buy visitor permits to use within the resident's parking bays.

"There's a number of those within the area of South Street and Sidmouth Street.

"What we're not going to do is make an exception for one faith group over another because that would be unfair.

"I can understand that a lot of people may not wish to pay to park but in the case of the mosque, then people staying for relatively short time, we're talking about around £1.50 for an hour, so really it's not an excessive charge in my view."
